So this week I have mostly been working on the area in the picture above.

Most of this area has point cloud data that is available on Sketchfab for free that I have been using as a guide, but many of the buildings have changed over time or have been demolished.

The 2 buildings between the Cornershop and the church no longer exist today, so I have to use references from old photographs and maps to figure out the size and shape of these buildings.

The church was next to get detailed, blocking out the windows and doors and adding stepped gables. then adding the walls and buildings that surround the graveyard.
I will do a set of assets to place around the streets including lamps, trees, barrels, boxes, and gravestones for the graveyard.

Another building that no longer exists today is the one across from the church. It sits between Fordel lodge, the building with the turret, and the stables of the Queens Hotel.

Using the same technique as above I used this photo to block in this building, copying and pasting details such as gutters windows stairs, and doors from other buildings.

Finally in UE5, I have spent some time looking at old paintings to figure out the atmosphere I want to go with. Settling for a foggy evening with a teal sky and orange lights.

There is a lot to do, there are around 50 – 60 buildings that are cubes with a pitched roof right now. I have 4 or 5 main buildings left that I would like to get to a similar level of detail as these buildings, and around another 20 I would like to add a small amount of detail, such as chimneys and holes for windows. If I run low on time I’ll focus my efforts on this current street.

So this week I’ve been mostly working on this part of the street above. For most of this area I have point cloud data to work from, but a lot of buildings have been heavily modified, replaced or demolished over the years.

Last week I have been working on the south side of High st and created some repeating props such as trees, lamps, boxes, carts, and barrels.

One of the most interesting buildings is the Gala Tower, some of the oldest pictures I have that date from around 1890.
It still needs another level of detail, adding in some sash windows and stepped gables and a shop front on the lower level.

One of the other buildings was the Central bar, a large Georgen townhouse, and Pub. there weren’t many old images of this, had to put together what this would have looked like from it being in the background of some other images. Luckily it’s not changed much since it was built so Google maps is a good reference. Although Bar extended into the shop at some point in the 50s or 60s and turned into a lounge.

Finally here are a couple of new shots that include some of the props I created.

I’m starting I think that the lighting has got a little extreme, so I might duplicate this map and redo all the lighting settings to see if I can balance it a little better. Possibly even make a daytime version.

Here is just a little photo dump update, I’ve added a couple more buildings and started to really push the lighting, and adding some trees really helped the fog and atmosphere.

The hotel was a tricky one as it’s quite detailed, and the shops next door didn’t have much in the way of historical reference.
I only had a tiny corner of a photograph and what is there today to go off of.

    Nice!

Make sure you include the Jolly Judge so I can go for a wee dram.

Over the weekend I moved over the road from the church to add another demolished building. This one sits between Fordel Lodge, the building with the turret, and the Queen’s Hotel stables.

I used the same technique as before, placing a background image on the camera and lining it up.

Finally, I spend some time researching what mood and atmosphere I wanted for the scene, by looking at old paintings. I settled on a foggy evening with a teal sky and orange lights.

I made a little progress in UE5, but it’s very quick and dirty, but I think it’s starting to take shape. 🙂

This week I’ve mostly been working on the area in the image above. For this section, I have point cloud data that I have been using as a guide, but many buildings have been heavily modified over the years, rebuilt, or demolished.

The two buildings between the corner shop and the church have been demolished so I have used this old photo attached to the camera in Blender to use as a guide to accurately model the missing buildings.

when I was happy with those buildings I continued on to the church, adding windows doors, and detailing some of the brickwork. To finish it off I continued the roads, buildings, and walls surrounding the graveyard.

Once I create assets to place around the town, such as street lamps, barrels, trees, water pumps, etc I will also add gravestones and populate the graveyard at that stage.
